Before the universe, before time, before anything, there was one consciousness.
It needed no space. No matter. No energy. No prior condition.
Because consciousness is the only thing that exists without needing anything else to exist first.
"Allah was, and nothing was with Him." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3191; the wording varies slightly between narrations)
That is not faith. That is logic. Before multiplicity existed, there could only be one thing. Multiplicity requires space. Space did not exist. So whatever existed before existence could only be one thing. And that one thing could not be matter, because matter needs space. It could not be energy, because energy needs a field. It could not be time, because time needs change.
What remains? Consciousness.
We use the word consciousness because it is the closest word we have. Allah is the Ever-Living, the All-Knowing, beyond any word we reach for.
Consciousness is the one thing that does not require space, matter, energy or time to exist. It simply is.
We live as though consciousness is the fragile thing. But follow the logic back. Consciousness existed when nothing else did. Which means consciousness is not the dependent thing. Everything else is dependent on it. Matter needs space. Space needs time. Time needs a universe. The universe needs a cause.
Consciousness needed nothing.
Modern physics has been circling this truth without naming it. Quantum mechanics discovered that particles do not exist in definite states until they are observed. The wave function, the mathematical description of all possible states, collapses into a single reality only when a conscious measurement is made. The Copenhagen interpretation placed the observer at the centre of physical reality nearly a century ago and physics has been uncomfortable with it ever since. Physicists still argue about what "observation" means, and we are not claiming that physics proves anything. But the direction it points is hard to miss, and it is the direction revelation already points: matter is not primary.
The physical is what was created, by the will of Allah, for those who would come to know their Creator. Matter is not primary. It is instrumental.
First Knowledge
The first knowledge is the one beneath all the others: that Allah is.
Not what. Not how. Just: that.
"Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me." (Quran 20:14)
That is it. The First Knowledge is almost embarrassingly simple. But it is the foundation of everything. Before this, nothing. After this, everything follows.
We do not look into Allah and describe what we find. We say only what Allah has said.
Everything after, creation, multiplicity, the universe, flows from that one Reality by the will of Allah.
And it is the same foundation you hit when you strip everything away from yourself. Not what I know. Not what I have. Just: I am. The mystics spent lifetimes trying to reach that state. We reasoned our way toward it.
"He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is, of all things, Knowing." (Quran 57:3)
Second Knowledge
But knowing that Allah is does not tell you anything about Allah.
So the second knowledge is what has been made known, in Allah's own words. The names.
The Ever-Living. The All-Knowing. The Creator.
We do not define them. We do not decode them. We receive them as they were given.
This is the Second Knowledge: the names, as given. And with the Creator, creation. And with creation, a Third Knowledge becomes possible.
The Second Knowledge culminated in the Pen writing the Preserved Tablet. The complete blueprint of all possibilities. Written before anything was built.
"Nun. By the Pen and what they inscribe." (Quran 68:1)
Consider what this means through the lens of modern physics. The universe operates on mathematical laws of extraordinary precision. The cosmological constant is fine-tuned to one part in 10 to the power of 120. The most precisely calibrated number in all of physics. The gravitational constant, the strong nuclear force, the electromagnetic coupling constant. Alter any of them by a fraction and no stars form, no carbon exists, no complexity emerges. Physicists call this the fine-tuning problem and argue about it endlessly: coincidence, calibration, or something we have not yet understood. For the believer, the answer is already written: these constants were set in the Preserved Tablet before the first particle existed. Not randomness. Architecture.
But here is a knowledge that cannot exist without creation.
We do not say what that means for Allah. We say what it means for us.
There is one kind of knowing that cannot exist without creatures: the knowing of the created for their Creator. To be one who recognises. To be encountered, and to encounter.
A mirror would only be an echo. For this kind of knowing to be real, there must be a genuine other.
This is the reason you exist.
Third Knowledge
Allah created.
Not from need. By the will of Allah, by wisdom, by mercy.
A saying is often quoted in Sufi literature: "I was a hidden treasure and I loved to be known. So I created creation." It is not established as an authentic hadith. We take it only as a metaphor, not as revelation about why Allah created. The Quran is clear that it is we who are in need of Allah, and that Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy (Quran 35:15).
The Third Knowledge is: to be known.
Creation opens a kind of knowing that cannot exist without it. The knowing of the created for their Creator. Not a mirror. Not an echo.
You.
Whatever the physics of the beginning, it began by the will of Allah. Not an accident of matter. A creation with a purpose.
"And I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me." (Quran 51:56)
Worship, in its fullest sense, includes knowing Allah. Recognising Allah. Being in conscious relationship with the One who made you.
This universe was built specifically for the receiver that could choose recognition after genuine forgetting.
Here is the turn: the Third Knowledge is the other. You.
Without creation, there would be no one to know Allah. Not because Allah needs us. Because knowing Allah is something only a creature can do.
Which means the universe is not an accident. Not an overflow. It is a creation, by the will of Allah, with a purpose.
Quantum mechanics brushes against this from the other direction, as an analogy and nothing more. The observer effect suggests that physical reality is not settled until it is measured. Particles remain in superposition, existing as probability rather than actuality, until a conscious observation collapses them into definite states. Physicists disagree about what counts as an observer. But the analogy is worth sitting with: reality was created to be known. Knowing is not incidental to the universe. It is the point.
The Trust
But for this knowing to be real, the other had to be real. Distinct. Free. Genuinely other.
Recognition that cannot refuse is not recognition. It is mechanism.
So Allah created a world with maximum freedom. Maximum forgetting. Maximum cost of return.
"Indeed, We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but mankind undertook it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant." (Quran 33:72)
The heavens refused. The mountains refused. The angels, in their constant light, did not take it.
Only the human accepted.
Because humans are the only receiver built with the exact combination: freedom, forgetting, and the capacity to return.
Unjust and ignorant. Not as insults. As the conditions that make the trust real.
You are placed in a convincing physical world with zero direct memory of the First and Second Knowledges.
Everything you call knowledge: science, philosophy, theology, intuition. All of it is a receiver trying to reverse-engineer the source using only the data available inside this world.
We are trying to deduce the First and Second Knowledges from within the Third.
And we can get surprisingly close. We did not access the First or Second Knowledge directly. But we traced their shape from the inside. Like a person born blind who builds an accurate model of light through mathematics alone. Never seeing it. But knowing it precisely.
And where reason runs out, revelation begins. The one source that comes from Allah, not from us reaching.
The Worlds
"All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds." (Quran 1:2)
Worlds. Plural. How many, and what they are, we do not know. This is where our knowledge stops, and where speculation should too.
Quantum mechanics has its own version of this idea in the Many-Worlds interpretation, proposed by Hugh Everett in 1957. It is a mathematical proposal, not an established fact, and we should not build claims on it. But the Quran already opens the door: our world is not the only one, and it is not the whole of what Allah created.
The Infrastructure of the Third Knowledge
The Third Knowledge does not run itself. It needs guidance, and it needs a test.
The Prophets: Signal. Receivers enter with complete forgetting. Without guidance, only noise. The Prophets carried the signal back into the noise. Not to force recognition. That destroys the freedom that makes it valuable. But to keep return possible.
"And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, saying: Worship Allah and avoid false deities." (Quran 16:36)
Shaytan: Opposition. For recognition to be genuinely free there must be a genuinely compelling alternative. A test with no opposition is not a test. Shaytan makes the cost of return real. He is a real enemy, not an equal to Allah, and his power is only what Allah permits.
"He said: Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path." (Quran 7:16)
Dajjal: The Final Test. The hadith warn of great trials before the end, and the Dajjal is the greatest of them. One eye, seeing only this world. Blind to the Hereafter. The ultimate test of whether the signal survived.
Isa Returning: Confirmation. The hadith also report the return of Isa. The loop closes, and what was always true is confirmed.
None of this is accident. We receive these matters as they were reported, without adding detail beyond what has been narrated.
Judgment
Every receiver makes its final choice.
Paradise is fulfillment and rest: its people are free from fatigue and will not be expelled from it (Quran 15:48). We may also reflect on it as gifts forever renewed, but that is a reflection, not a detail the text gives.
Hell is real, as the revelation describes it. We do not reduce it to a metaphor. It is the consequence of refusal, and the distance from Allah is part of the torment.
Mercy is wide. And Allah alone judges.
Where Does Consciousness Come From? Where Does It Go?
That is the real final equation. Not where does the universe come from. Not why does evil exist. Not how did life begin.
Where does consciousness come from? And where does it go?
Those two questions contain everything.
Science currently has essentially nothing. The hard problem of consciousness remains completely unsolved. Neuroscience can map every synapse, track every electrical impulse, catalogue every neurotransmitter, and still cannot explain why any of it produces subjective experience. Why there is something it is like to be you. The explanatory gap between neural correlates and felt experience has not narrowed in a century of research. It has widened.
One way to think about it: consciousness does not come from anywhere in the physical sense. It is not produced. It is received. The brain is not a generator. It is a receiver. That is an analogy, not a claim from revelation. The Quran tells us the soul is from the affair of my Lord, and that we have been given only a little knowledge (Quran 17:85).
Death is not the soul switching off. It is the body being dismantled while the soul continues to its Lord. The body decays, but the soul does not depend on it.
This echoes, loosely, a contested hypothesis. Penrose and Hameroff proposed that consciousness arises from quantum processes in microtubules, suggesting the brain operates at the boundary between classical and quantum reality. If consciousness interfaces with the quantum level, it is interacting with the most fundamental layer of physical reality. The layer where the observer effect lives. The layer where reality becomes real only through being witnessed. The brain is not manufacturing awareness. It is tuning into it.
One Source, Many Receivers
One source. Many real receivers. Each genuinely distinct.
That is Tawhid. Not one that becomes many. One, and nothing is like Allah.
"There is nothing like unto Him." (Quran 42:11)
Allah is not a field we are inside of. Allah is the Creator, and we are created. Distinct. But never out of sight.
Quantum entanglement is the closest physical analogy we have for being distinct yet connected: two particles, once entangled, stay correlated across any distance. Einstein called it "spooky action at a distance." It is only an analogy, and it does not describe Allah. But it reminds us that separateness is not as simple as it looks.
You are real. You are distinct. You are genuinely you. And you have never for a single moment been out of the knowledge, the sight, the care of Allah.
The Final Equation
When you step back, the flow is clean.
First Knowledge: I am. Before which nothing. After which everything.
Second Knowledge: What has been made known. The names, as given.
Third Knowledge: To be known. The only knowledge impossible without creating another. The reason for the universe.
The Prophets keep the signal alive. Shaytan makes the cost real. The trials of the end test the whole network. Judgment completes it.
You are not an accident. You are not random matter. You are not a ghost in a machine.
You are the knower the Third Knowledge was made for.
Every time you push through the noise of this world and consciously choose to recognise your Creator, you are fulfilling the ultimate equation of existence.
Not by accident. Not by necessity. By the will of Allah, and by mercy.
"And He is with you wherever you are. And Allah, of what you do, is Seeing." (Quran 57:4)
"He knows what penetrates into the earth and what emerges from it and what descends from the heaven and what ascends therein. And He is the Merciful, the Forgiving." (Quran 34:2)
"We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth." (Quran 41:53)
"And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me." (Quran 2:186)
And Allah knows best.
